Intermediate Latin: Cicero’s In Catilinam
The goal of this course is both to increase reading proficiency and to provide the knowledge, tools, and experience necessary for students to advance to the next level of Latin. Through our readings of Cicero’s In Catilinam I & II, we aim to understand both the content and form of Ciceronian oratory. Furthermore, we consider these texts and their delivery within the broader context of Rome’s political landscape during the Late Republic; for this reason, we also read several pieces of secondary scholarship about Roman culture, Cicero and his contemporaries, and oratory.
